Well that was awesome.

AMAZING. In a word, amazing! I'd been to South America before, but never as far south as the Patagonian Ice Sheet. I'll do a multi-part blog post about the trip because it's just too long for one post!
To start, here is a link showing the whole trip: Google Earth Map
As if often the case, I made an itinerary, then told some friends about it, and they came along. Four of us left Boston on the 28th of November - the Tuesday after Thanksgiving here in the US. We flew from Boston to Atlanta, then from Atlanta to Santiago, Chile.
It was a very long flight, but the benefit of the Delta Airlines Sky Club plus slightly bigger than normal seats made it more comfortable than it might have otherwise been.

The approach to Santiago was just amazing - the sunrise over the Andes, and the valley fog - just wow.
We arrived in Chile early in the morning. Fortunately I slept really well on the flight, so when we got to our AirBnB, I just relaxed on the deck. The AirBnB
was a large 13th floor apartment with a great view. I did a live video from there - perhaps you saw it! We had a restful day of walking around and having dinner - but as quickly as we arrived, we were off to the airport again at 6:00AM, this time for a flight to Punta Arenas Chile, about a three hour flight to the South (closer to Antarctica).
We
got in about one in the afternoon, and took a look around look around the city. Punta Arenas is actually quite a large city for that part of the world. The sea was visible and in fact it is the straits of Magellan, which is a passageway allowing ships to go between the Atlantic and the Pacific without going all the way around the horn of South America. Many ships were visible making this passage.
More from Patagoina later! Curious about Patagonia? I'm happy to answer questions!
